on the edge... concentrates on the ephemeral in the landscape, in particular the littoral zones of our seashore, such as the shelters, huts, piers and pools prominent on many of our seaside promenades. Hodgson classifies these structures as being transient; they are only temporarily part of our landscape. Some of our seaside towns are thriving and cared for, but for others, unless they experience some substantial regeneration, these artefacts on their promenades will continue in a slow decline into obscurity.
These man-made structures may be seen as a visual intrusion by some but Hodgson regards them as being valuable architectural assets worth preserving with their historical features and aesthetics forming an essential part of our seaside landscape and heritage.
